LO3: Be able to carry out specific production role for a chosen media production

My Role in a Production:
I undertook the role of film editor in unit 46, this was a production where I edited together the promo for a film called Silent Captive. I had to use my knowledge and experience on editing software, specifically Adobe Premiere Pro, which is what I normally use.

Evidence of being film editor:

These are all the contributions I had made, as my role of film editor, to the promo we were making for the film Silent Captive.

Storyboards:
The first thing I did as a film editor was partly contributed towards the storyboards, these were done by another group member, but I helped with the edit choices on them, as this would give me a clear idea of what they would want in the future when I'm actually editing the shots together. Here are some examples:

For this storyboard I had chosen to go with the editing technique 'dip to black', reffered to as 'fade to black' in the storyboard. This was chosen to be used as it would fit in well with the speed of the trailer at that time, which is slow and calm.
This storyboard on the other hand, would be the transisition between the slow paced shots and music to the much faster paced and music with a quicker tempo. To emphasise this, this final shot that uses dip to black also uses a time lapse of a river/stream, this makes it look quick and so starts the transistion into the faster paced part of the trailer.

Gantt Chart:


 This is the gantt chart we had created to show what the expected timescales for each job would be, editing was estimated to take only 3 weeks.

Production Schedule:

The production schedules were crated at the beginning of each week, and even though it doesn't state that we do, we started the editing of the production and created the project file. In the end the film editing really only took two weeks instead of the estimated three and it went through a few drafts with adjustments made to it every so often to make the final product look more proffesional so that it could be more successful. The production schedules were useful to me as they helped give me a clear idea of what I was doing that week.

The Rushes:





After the filming was done, I as film editor, had created rushes from the two shoots we did. I had to analyse which shots were suitable for use in the trailer. If a shot was too shakey that even the edit effect 'Warp Stabaliser' wouldn't be able to fix it, or that the focus wasn't right and didn't fit with the other shots focus and then there's just the fact that the shot didn't go the way as planned.

Footage Log:


Here is evidence of a footage log being recorded by me when I was assessing the footage in the rushes, I had not only noted what footage could be used, but what time intervals in that footage would work best.

Offline Edit:






After choosing the suitable shots I created the offline edit, this is the edit that has all the footage cut up and placed in the order that it will go in the final product, but this doesn't include any edits on the visuals and audio of the product, in this case the film trailer. 

Edit Decision List:


The Edit Decision list is a list of all the editoral choices I had made for the different shots seen in the offline edit. This included writing the time intervals they take place in the edit, stating when we would use music or include dialogue, the edits to the visuals i.e. Gamma Correction and then the transitional effects. This made it much more efficient and quicker to edit together the trailer and make the actual edits to the shots.

Editing:

When editing the film I did not work alone as sometimes I work on other parts of the trailer (Such as the title and production logo animation) so other people in my group edited the film trailer. This can be seen here;

The first noted difference is that there are a few shots that have been included to make the trailer more speradic and non-linear as conventional trailers are to give the film more mystery to the plot or story. The only other difference was the inclusion of different graphics, specifically the animated title at the end instead of a basic title card. This shows that productions can change from the original planning, such as the shots not being exact to the storyboards, or editoral choices are changed to make the end product look more proffesional and successful. 

Addititional tasks I took on:

As well as actually editing the clips together as a film editor, I had also took on a role similar to a visual effects artist as I developed two animations. The two animations were a title card and a production logo which I created in Adobe After Effects CC for Unit 46, and even Unit 41 where I had created another title.

Unit 46 Title:

A screenshot of creating the 'Silent Captive' title for the film, it was animated in Adobe After Effects with Assets from Video Copilot (http://www.videocopilot.net/tutorials/translucent_glass/) where I had followed a tutorial.

Unit 46 Production Logo:


I had also created an animated logo that would be placed in the audio-visual promo, I thought it would be more inteesting to have than just a static image of a logo that fades in and out.

Unit 41 Title:


 This was my latest animation I had created for Unit 41, where it would be placed as a title card in the short film.
